Battlefields

Experience The Civil War At The World’s Largest Military Monument

Four battlefields just outside Fredericksburg are part of the world's largest military monument – the 9,000-acre Fredericksburg and Spotsylvania National Military Park:

The Park Service also maintains sites at Chatham Manor, Salem Church and Guinea Station, where “Stonewall” Jackson died from his wounds received at the Battle of Chancellorsville.

A self-guided tour of the battlefields begins at the Fredericksburg Battlefield Visitor Center and continues into Spotsylvania County, where the vast majority of the battle sites are located.
The battlefield parks, wayside exhibits, exhibit shelters, interpretive trails and many historic buildings help tell the story of the Civil War in the Fredericksburg area. Park historians are on duty daily at both the Chancellorsville and Fredericksburg Battlefield visitor centers. During summer months, from early June through Labor Day, special interpretive programs help recreate the scene during the Civil War.

A tour through these battlefields is an experience in one of the most dramatic times in American history, a tour of lands carefully preserved to commemorate the sacrifices of the Civil War. See it all, and plan on taking your time.

Two visitor centers help interpret the four battlefields:
